Piping Terms Glossary
For reference, the SK website has an explanation of various technical words relating to pipes.
English | Thai | คำอธิบาย |
Alby Steel | เหล็กกล้าผสม | Steel contains alloying materials other than carbon to improve the physical and chemical qualities of steel |
Butt Weld | ต่อชนเชื่อม | - |
Beveled End | ปลายบาก | The bevel end is suitable for butt welding joints because it has a lean angle with the pipe surface |
Coupling | ข้อต่อตรง | A coupling is a device that connects the ends of two shafts for the purpose of transmitting power |
Cast Iron | เหล็กหล่อ | Steel that contains more than 2.0% carbon |
Cast Steel | เหล็กเหนียวหล่อ | - |
Dimension | มิติ | Such as width, length, height, etc. They are often confused with the word “size” which English uses the term "size" |
Ductile Cast Iron | เหล็กหล่อเหนียว | - |
Elbow | ข้องอ | Devices used to change the direction of the pipe |
End Connection | ชนิดของปลาย | To identify the type of end fittings such as BW, SW or Flange, etc. |
Fitting | ฟิตติ้ง | Equipment used in pipe systems to connect straight, turn, and bend sections of pipe or tube |
- | อุปกรณ์ต่อ | Include flanges, Valves, Gaskets, etc. |
Flange | หน้าแปลน | Increases strength and facilitates the attachment/transfer of contact force to another object |
Flat Face | หน้าเรียบ | The gasket surface on the Flat Face flange is in the same plane as the bolting circle face |
Forged Steel | เหล็กขึ้นรูป | Forged steel is a substance made by melting iron and carbon together under extreme pressure |
Plain End | ปลายตัด | PE pipes have ends that are cut at a 90-degree angle to the pipe run for a smooth, level finish |
Raised Face | หน้ายก | The gasket surfaces are raised above the bolting circle face |
Socket weld | สวมเชื่อม | - |
Steel | เหล็กกล้า | Steel containing no more than 2.0% carbon |
Stainless Steel | เหล็กกล้าไร้สนิม | Steel with at least 10.5% chromium alloy |
Valve | วาล์ว | Sluices |
Pipe and Tube Standards
ASTM sets standards for materials, manufacturing methods, and materials testing methods of various products. Pipes are one product that ASTM has a wide range of standards to suit the fluid conditions, environmental conditions, temperature, and operating pressure.
Carbon steel and Alby steel pipes material standards
Carbon steel pipes and Alby steel pipes by ASTM standards, both pipe, and tube, commonly used in the industry as follows:
- ASTM
A 53 Pipe, steel, black and hot-dipped, zinc coated, welded and seamless
A 106 Seamless carbon steel pipe for high temperature service
Standard specification table
ASTM No. | Product type | Material | Manufacturing method | Application | Size |
A 53* | Pipe | Carbon steel black or hot dipped galv. |
Seamless Welded – ERW Welded – FBW |
General |
NPS 1/8 Up to 26 |
A 106 | Pipe | Carbon Steel | Seamless | High Temperature | All sizes |
Remark
*ASTM A 53 has 3 types, but we provide information of 2 types as follows:
Type S = seamless
Type E = ERW (Electric resistance welded)
Pipe type
1. Black steel pipe
ASTM A53 Grade A & B
Can be subdivided into two types:
1. ERW
2. Seamless (SCH 40 / SCH 80 / SCH 160)
2. Galvanized steel pipe
BS-S
BS-M
BS-H
3. Stainless steel pipe grade 304/304L and 316/316L
Can be subdivided into two types:
1.Seam (SCH 10S / SCH 40S).
2.Seamless (SCH 10S / SCH 40S / SCH 80S / SCH 160S)
